Of all the numbers on a toilet spec sheet, rough-in is the one that will actually stop you in your tracks. Get it wrong and the toilet either will not bolt down or leaves an awkward gap at the wall. Everything else — bowl shape, flush rating, finish — is a preference. Rough-in is a constraint.
What Rough-In Actually Means
Rough-in is the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the centre of the drainpipe in the floor. Because you usually cannot see the drainpipe once a toilet is installed, you measure to the centre of the closet bolts instead — the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor flange. They sit directly over the flange centre.
Three sizes cover almost every home: 12 inches is by far the most common, with 10 inches and 14 inches appearing in older houses and in bathrooms where the plumbing was routed around a joist.
How to Measure It
- Measure from the finished wall, not the baseboard. If you have a baseboard, measure from the wall above it, or measure to the baseboard and add its thickness.
- Measure to the centre of the closet bolt on either side of the toilet base. If your toilet has four bolts, use the rear pair.
- Round to the nearest standard size. A reading of 11 3/4 inches almost certainly means a 12-inch rough-in; manufacturers build in a little tolerance.
If the toilet is already removed, measure straight to the centre of the flange opening in the floor. That is the most accurate reading you will get.
What If You Have a 10-Inch or 14-Inch Rough-In?
You have two options. The first is to buy a toilet made for that rough-in — most major manufacturers offer at least a few models in 10-inch, and fewer in 14-inch. The second is to use an offset flange, which shifts the connection point a couple of inches. Offset flanges work, but they add a fitting and a potential leak point, so a purpose-built toilet is the cleaner answer where one exists.
What you should not do is force a 12-inch toilet into a 10-inch space. The tank will not sit flush against the wall, and you will be looking at that gap every day.
Measure Before You Shop, Not After
Rough-in is worth establishing before you start comparing models, because it narrows the field immediately. Once you know the number, you can move on to the decisions that are actually about comfort and preference: elongated versus round bowl, one-piece versus two-piece, and whether you want a comfort height seat.

A Few Measurements Worth Taking at the Same Time
While you have the tape measure out, note these too:
- Side clearance. Measure from the centre of the drain to the nearest wall or vanity on each side. Building codes commonly ask for at least 15 inches, and a cramped toilet is unpleasant regardless of what the code says.
- Front clearance. Measure from the wall to whatever is in front of the toilet. This is where bowl shape starts to matter, since an elongated bowl projects roughly two inches further into the room.
- Door swing. Check the door does not catch the tank lid or the seat when open.
The Short Version
Measure from the finished wall to the centre of the rear closet bolts. Round to 10, 12 or 14 inches. Buy a toilet built for that number. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between an afternoon job and a returned appliance.
